Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) leads to damage to the tubular epithelium and acute kidney injury (AKI). It is also associated with progressive loss of kidney function and the development of chronic kidney disease. The role of TGF-&946; in stimulating extracellular matrix deposition and promoting renal fibrosis has been well established. Our study was designed to evaluate the role of TGF-&946; in the response of human proximal tubular epithelial cells to IRI.
